Heritage Open Days

Visit Norwood Park this autumn, a quintessentially Georgian country house, as they invite you on a journey to explore the remarkable stories found in the ordinary lives of those who have shaped its past.

Step back into Everyday Histories at Norwood Park and uncover the stories of ordinary lives that shaped the community. Explore the grounds, discover hidden gems and delight in a special history talk from owner, Sir John Starkey. Discover the stories of those who lived at Norwood Park during the Second World War, when Norwood Park served as a convalescent home for wounded servicemen, under the care of the British Red Cross Society. Between 1942 and 1946, the house provided a place of recovery, rehabilitation, and rest for those returning from the frontline. The Hall was fitted with around 100 hospital beds, while nurses worked tirelessly to care for the wounded and the gardeners worked relentlessly to provide food for the additional residents. But the everyday histories stretch back much further. From its origins as an 18th-century country house, through generations of family life, estate workers, servants, gardeners and tenants, Norwood Park has always been shaped by the people who lived and worked here. Their daily tasks, celebrations, challenges and traditions form the fabric of its shared history. From wartime recovery to estate life across the centuries, celebrate the ordinary moments that quietly shaped the houses extraordinary past.
