Holocaust Survivor Testimony - Hedi Argent MBE
It is a privilege to be able to hear first-hand testimony from Holocaust Survivors. Over the summer the museum has a series of Survivor talks.
"We have a duty to bear witness. While I can do it, I'll do it." The wonderful Hedi Argent MBE shares her testimony of what it was like to live in, and escape Nazi occupied Austria. Hedi Argent was born in 1929, and lived in a suburb of Vienna, Austria with her parents, Max and Elise Schnabl. Hedi remembers the presence of anti-Jewish racism long before the Anschluss in Austria in 1938. Increasing antisemitic laws meant Hedi’s father lost his job, and the family lost their home and many of their possessions. The family managed to escape to England in 1939, bringing only one suitcase each. After the war, the family found out that all their relatives had been murdered in the Holocaust. Hedi's talk explores many themes such as: friendship, becoming a refugee as a child, and how we can support modern day refugees in the present.
